ConferencesHidden Laboratories of Care: smartphone repair shops as social hubs
“Dr. Smartphone,” “iklinik,” “Smartphone clinique…” These are some of the names of a new type of business that has appeared in the past ten years: smartphone repair stores. The services provided vary, but they tend to focus on the material elements of the handset or terminal. Repair technicians may also be able to address software issues, or provide help to local people living in the neighborhood (from advices about addressing other areas of everyday life impacted by digital technologies to administrative tasks). The talk will address how these places can be seen as “hidden laboratories of care” for local communities, beyond simply “repairing” smartphones.
