Elliot Woods (UK) is a digital media artist from Manchester UK.
He graduated with a Masters from the School of Physics and Astronomy and entered the arts following the founding of studio Kimchi and Chips in 2009 where he currently tests alternative relationships between images and reality. Here he participates in conceptual and technical design of projects, and develops techniques in computer vision, machine learning and robotics. His works reveal the implicit nature of systems therein suggesting to audiences revelatory experiences about nature and reality. He has created large scale light field art installations which draw floating images of the sun out of sunlight, or moons from 600 calibrated projector beams. Elliot has contributed to the openFrameworks and VVVV creative coding platforms and has released over 100 open source libraries for free on GitHub.

Elliot will give an overview of the technical systems of Kimchi and Chips’ Another Moon : A network of 40 towers that collect sunlight during the day and then project calibrated laser light back into the sky to form a second moon in the sky. The project incorporates mathematical systems, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, optical engineering and network engineering. The first half of the lecture will focus on the hardware systems, and the second half will focus on ‘Non linear fitting’ : a set of machine learning systems that can be used to calibrate, measure and control artworks accurately. This technique is used in almost all of Kimchi and Chips artworks to create an additional layer of intention and finesse to their work.

Accurat is a new breed of full-service strategy and digital experience design firm, operating at the intersection of data, design, and technology. Accurat&#8217;s own methodology and working philosophy —Data Humanism— strives to reconnect data to what it represents: knowledge, behaviors, people.
Irene and Alessandro, Data Visualization Designers at Accurat, will be your facilitators for this workshop and will guide you through the process of translating data into personal and engaging experiences. They both have years of experience in designing static and interactive data visualizations that span from business analytics dashboards to augmented reality and physical space installations.

Accurat

In this workshop, working alone or in a small team, you will learn how to use data to tell a story about the KIKK community. Irene and Alessandro will show you how to analyze the dataset collected from the collaborative installation created by Accurat for the festival and map it onto shapes and other visual elements with meaning. You will create a poster that portrays the KIKK community from your own unique perspective, using data!

Frederik De Bleser &amp; Lieven Menschaert are part of the The Algorithmic Gaze&#8217;s team.The applications of artificial intelligence are everywhere: just think of image recognition, recommendation algorithms, voice and face recognition algorithms, &#8230; In the arts, AI also leads to interesting results, however often by using powerful hardware or existing datasets, and thus beyond the reach or control of most artists.Our mission is to bring AI into the artist&#8217;s practice by developing open-source tools and methodologies that make the domain more accessible and transparent. Our research asks how AI can become a trusted partner in the creative process, both during creation and execution. We explore how AI understands the materiality of body, space and time. Our approach avoids megalomanic datasets; instead we focus on carefully self-assembled datasets and an intuitive visual understanding of algorithms to avoid the bias inherent in large-scale models and take ownership of our own &#8220;small AI.&#8221;Frederik De Bleser is a researcher and lecturer at Sint Lucas Antwerp. His research focuses on the connection between art and technology and the development of free software tools for generative design, data visualization and artificial intelligence.Lieven Menschaert is a researcher and lecturer at Sint Lucas Antwerp and LUCA school of arts. His main interest is in generative and computational design and thus sees AI and machine learning as the logical next step in a procedural generation practice.

The Algorithmic Gaze

Machine learning for creative purposes has progressed in leaps and bounds in the last years. But the whole process still feels like black magic. What does it take to train your own model? How do you even get started? And how can you use this process creatively?
During this workshop we&#8217;ll introduce some works made with creative AI and explore what it could mean for an artistic practice. We&#8217;ll go over the different steps on how to train an image-to-image model based on a dataset. The goal is to work together as a group to build one or two machine learning models.
This workshop is based on the research and tools developed by &#8220;The Algorithmic Gaze&#8221;, such as Figment, to get the data ready for training.
Participants should bring their own laptop. If you have an interesting, medium-size dataset (2000+ images) you can bring that as well.
